TWO PENSACOLA MEN CHARGED IN FEDERAL INDICTMENT FOR CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE METHAMPHETAMINE 09/02/2025 08:00 AM EDT PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Ronald Dale White, 39, and Darius Rafael Whisler, 33, of Pensacola, were indicted by a federal grand jury this week, charging them with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and multiple counts of distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. Ronald White was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Deep azure skies vault high overhead… and refrigerating breezes steal in from the Chesapeake Bay. All is peace. Many analysts consider September a month of market peace. Look to October, they say. October is when the gales blow in. The Panic of 1907, the Crash of 1929, "Black Monday" 1987. They all came barreling through in October. October's reputation is so villainous, so felonious, it has even earned a title: The "October effect." Yet is it true? Has October truly earned its blackened reputation? Today I haul the accused into the dock, interrogate its record… and pronounce verdict. Wrongfully Convicted October's bankrupt reputation likely owes to a sour string of luck. And its conviction was based heavily upon hearsay and circumstantial evidence. October has received a very poor legal representation. Affirms Stephen Williamson, former vice president of the Federal Reserve's St. Louis district court: Stock market crashes have occurred sufficiently infrequently in history that there is not enough evidence on when they are more likely to occur. The gentlemen and ladies of Yardeni Research further vindicate October of crimes against stocks. The average S&P October return is not negative in the least, they inform us. It is, in fact, a positive 0.4%. It is a slender gain — yet it is a gain. Meantime, Investopedia informs us that more bear markets ended in October than began in October. And so he dismisses all criminal charges against the month of October — with prejudice. In conclusion: An innocent man has been pitched into infamy and packed off to prison on wrongful charges. Let us then — in the highest spirit of justice — clear his blackened name. Does another month take its place in the gallery of evil? Is there a month truly deserving of October's label? The record argues that yes, another month is a menace greater than October. Which month? That month is September — the month presently underweigh. The Market's Worst Month MarketWatch: History suggests September is the worst month of the year in terms of stock-market performance. The S&P 500 has generated an average monthly decline of 1.2% and finished higher only 44.3% of the time dating back to 1928, according to Dow Jones Market Data.  The historical performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite also indicates stocks could experience a lackluster period in September, with the two indexes delivering an average monthly drop of 1.1% and 0.9%, respectively.  The Dow has recorded positive returns in September only 41.7% of the time since 1897, while the Nasdaq has finished higher 54.1% of the time since 1971, according to Dow Jones Market Data.  "Since the Dow Jones Industrial Average was created in the late 1890s," adds financial columnist Mark Hulbert notes, "September has produced an average loss of 1.1%." "The 11 other months of the calendar," adds Hulbert, "have produced an average gain of 0.8%." Nor do one or two roguish and renegade Septembers explain it, says Hulbert: "On the contrary, the month has an impressively consistent record at or near the bottom of the rankings." Meantime, Fisher Investments claims September is the lone month to average a negative return since 1925. The "September Effect" The facts confirm it. September is the great thief of investor money, not October. Next to September, we must conclude, October is nearly a month of nectar, a month of honey. And so today we correct a cruel and libelous wrong. It is time to replace the "October effect" with the infinitely more deserving "September effect." Here CFRA chief investment strategist Sam Stovall posts an advisory: As a result of September's track record for benchmark beatings, we remind investors to prepare for the possibility of disappointing results for both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq in the month ahead. Investopedia: Several theories exist to explain this historical pattern. One posits that traders, returning to work from summer vacations, rebalance portfolios in September, increasing selling volume and putting pressure on stock prices. Another theory suggests that bond offerings pick up in September as summer vacations wind down; those bond sales attract money that would otherwise have supported stock prices. Still another blames mutual funds, whose fiscal years typically end on Oct. 31. Funds, the theory suggests, close out losing positions in the last months of their fiscal year for tax purposes.  Which theory is most formidable, I do not know. Regardless, the historical record indicts September. Mark Twain's Trading Advice Do I hazard a prediction of September doom? No I do not. I have posted too many false alarms in times past. That is, I have been forced to munch crow many times in the past — without salt, without butter, without lubricating beverages to help it down. I harbor little appetite for another dose. Yet if history is a reliable barometer… which I believe it is… September is perhaps the most dangerous month to speculate in stocks. Early on in my Wall Street career, I got assigned coverage of tech stocks... As you might expect, I quickly learned that it was a lot more fun than some quieter corners of the market – like utilities.

The 'Great Utility Transformation' By Joe Austin, senior analyst, Chaikin Analytics Early on in my Wall Street career, I got assigned coverage of tech stocks... As you might expect, I quickly learned that it was a lot more fun than some quieter corners of the market – like utilities. From a career standpoint, following utilities wasn't quite a graveyard job. But it was close. In an exciting quarter, a tech company might have 50% revenue growth. And it could have introduced a cool new product or service. And for a utility, an exciting quarter might mean revenues were up 4%... with a $0.02 increase to the dividend. Personally, I had nothing against utility stocks. But they felt like the financial equivalent of watching paint dry. However, that's all different today... The transmission and distribution of power is still regulated. But power generation is a free-market, competitive business. And what was once a sleepy corner of the market is now a key player in the AI revolution. The real surprise here is how the whole business is growing... According to Bank of America Institute, U.S. demand for electricity grew by roughly 0.5% per year from 2014 to 2024. But over the next 10 years, it's expected to grow by about 2.5% annually. That's five times the historical rate. My younger self would have never predicted this... Utilities are no longer boring, low-growth dividend stocks. They're now some of the market's most compelling growth opportunities. And the question for investors isn't really the "if" around that demand. Instead, it's how to pick the winners in capturing the value it creates... Hundreds-of-Percent Gains for Certain Utility Stocks Exelon (EXC) is a great example of change within the utility industry... At its peak, Exelon was the largest U.S. utility by revenue – serving about 10 million customers. Its subsidiary PECO Energy was even an original Thomas Edison utility incorporated in 1902. In early 2022, Exelon split into two companies. Its power generation assets went into a new company called Constellation Energy (CEG). And its transmission and distribution assets stayed in the "old" Exelon. Regulation was a big driver of the split... In 2019, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued a decision that changed the rules around subsidies for "clean energy" assets. This hit Exelon hard. It had the largest fleet of nuclear power plants in the U.S. And at its peak, Exelon produced about 12% of the country's carbon-free energy. Exelon also saw that power generation and transmission and distribution had become completely different businesses. Generation was unregulated and had huge potential for growth. Transmission and distribution were still regulated and had little potential for growth. And from an investor standpoint, separating the two was a home run... Just take a look at the difference in stock performance since the split completion in February 2022... That's a great example of how the market views these two kinds of businesses. In the utility world, folks call Constellation an independent power producer ("IPP"). Constellation is one of the five largest publicly traded IPP companies in the U.S. The other four are NextEra Energy (NEE), NRG Energy (NRG), Talen Energy (TLN), and Vistra (VST). IPPs are the hottest part of the utility sector. That's because they're best positioned to benefit from that growth in power demand. And they're better positioned to capture that growth – since they aren't regulated in the same way as other utilities. IPPs can look at where demand is growing and invest for the best opportunities. Regulated utilities still have to consider their rate base before putting any money to work. And the growth in demand isn't just related to AI... As I mentioned earlier, U.S. demand for electricity is expected to grow by about 2.5% annually over the next 10 years. At 1%, building electrification is the biggest driver of the increase. The other drivers are data centers at 0.5%, increased industrial consumption at 0.3%, and electric vehicles at 0.2%. (The final 0.5% comes from the historical annual growth figure.) So even if you're not a big believer in the AI story, there are still strong tailwinds from other avenues of growth. Last year, the IPP stocks I mentioned gained an average of about 131%. That compares with a roughly 20% increase in the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU). Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Index gained 23% last year. This year, those IPP stocks are up roughly 45% on average. XLU is up roughly 11% in 2025. And the S&P 500 is up about 10%. Talen is the highflyer in the group. It soared roughly 215% last year. And it's up about 88% in 2025. Today, investors in utilities have a big choice... They can invest in the growth potential of the IPPs. Or they can stay with those "steady Eddie" low-growth dividend payers. Sometimes, the future sneaks up on you in unlikely places. The boring utilities I once passed over are now delivering incredible returns. And covering utilities is no longer the graveyard shift. It's a fascinating corner of the market to watch.
