Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, and Japanese Minister of Defense Hamada Yasukazu convened a Trilateral Defense Ministers Meeting (TDMM) in Hawaii on October 1. The defense leaders met to review progress on a wide range of concrete initiatives discussed at the last TDMM held in Singapore in June.

During the meeting, the ministers exchanged views on the regional security environment, and discussed deepening trilateral defense cooperation on enhanced information sharing, exercises, and science and technology initiatives. With the second TDMM of 2022 having reaffirmed strategic alignment among the three leaders, the ministers committed to taking concrete, practical steps together in order to anchor stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Readout of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III's Meeting With Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence

On October 1, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III met with his Australian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, in Honolulu to discuss the regional security situation and advancing defense cooperation between the United States and Australia. Secretary Austin shared his appreciation for Australia's contributions to upholding regional and global security, and both leaders agreed to continue working bilaterally and multilaterally to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The two leaders exchanged views on how to accelerate and deepen bilateral defense cooperation on force posture and defense technology collaboration, and reviewed progress under the trilateral Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) partnership. They confirmed that they would advance U.S. and Australian defense cooperation at the upcoming Australia-U.S. Ministerial (AUSMIN) meeting.
