They went viral by accident. Now the people behind popular memes are making thousands.

Zoe Roth is part of a unique club of people who went viral by accident. A 2005 image of her grinning somewhat ominously at the camera while firefighters work to save a burning home behind her, known as "Disaster Girl," has circulated as a meme online for years. But this unusual type of digital fame usually offered little in the way of financial upside to its subjects until NFTs exploded in recent months.

Now an influx of viral celebrities like Roth featured in classic memes have minted and sold their images as NFTs. In the past, monetizing a meme was nearly impossible for its creator. NFTs have changed that, leading to what some experts have dubbed a meme "gold rush."
