| USPTO publishes supplemental guidance for examination of design patent applications related to computer-generated interfaces and icons The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is publishing supplemental guidance to be used by USPTO personnel to aid in determining current issues presented as to whether design patent applications related to computer-generated interfaces and icons are appropriately directed to statutory subject matter under 35 U.S.C. 171. The guidance highlights the latest types of patent eligible designs (e.g., computer generated interfaces or icons in the form of projections and holograms). The guidance also provides guidance on attendant drawing requirements and for claim and title requirements under 37 CFR 1.153 and 37 CFR 1.1067. This supplemental guidance is effective immediately and will be included in the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure in due course. Additional training materials will be provided to examiners.
