The historic winter storm threatening more than 140 million people has prompted urgent calls from officials to prepare. The governors of North and South Carolina were among the leaders of at least 17 states that have declared emergency status to free up resources for aid. Gov. Josh Stein warned that the storm could cause major disruptions, possibly for days. "Get everything you need in advance of the storm and have a plan in case your power goes out," he said. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that FEMA has prepositioned supplies, prepared incident management teams to deploy and put urban search and rescue teams on standby. Electricity and gas companies are warning customers that they could experience power outages. Airlines have already canceled more than 5,000 flights through the weekend, and experts estimate up to 15,000 could be delayed by tomorrow. Follow live updates on our blog. |

In recent weeks, the Justice Department has started investigating a growing number of President Donald Trump's political adversaries. Minnesota Democrats are among the latest added to the DOJ's lengthy list of targets. The department sent out a half-dozen criminal subpoenas to various state and local officials, just hours after Trump called for a probe into Gov. Tim Walz. "Investigate these Corrupt Politicians, and do it now!" the president wrote on Truth Social. Protesters in the Twin Cities who disrupted church services are also being investigated. The president had called them "troublemakers who should be thrown in jail." From the head of the Federal Reserve to a former cable TV critic, read who else Trump is targeting. |

Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner this week unveiled plans for a "New Gaza" filled with gleaming high-rise towers and tourist-packed beaches — a vision that stands in stark contrast to the reality of a territory in ruins after two years of war. At the World Economic Forum, Kushner presented a map with residential areas, data centers and advancing manufacturing. He said much of the initial work to rebuild Gaza could be done in two to three years. "We've already started removing the rubble and doing some of the demolition," he told leaders. On the ground, meanwhile, Kushner's plan felt like another world. Israeli forces continue to occupy around half of the enclave, and Palestinians are skeptical that will soon change. "I want to understand where this so-called World Peace Council in Gaza is?" said one man. "Where is it? We've been looking for it and we can't find it." Read the full story here. |
Jarrett Stidham hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season NFL game since 2023. On Sunday, he will be the starting quarterback tasked with leading the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl. After an injury took Bo Nix out for the season, Stidham was called up to take his spot in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots — the first team he was drafted by. He was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders before coming to Denver, but despite the great names on his record, Stidham has only ever started in four games. Nonetheless, he seems to have the full confidence of coach Sean Payton. "Stiddy is ready to go," Payton said. "I feel like I've got a [backup quarterback] that's capable of starting for a handful — a number of teams. And I know he feels the same way." Read the full story here. | |

They call it "Little Denmark on the Prairie," a tiny farming town in the middle of the Great Plains where a working Danish windmill turns above Main Street and a bakery sells kringles alongside coffee. In Elk Horn, Iowa — known as the largest rural Danish American settlement in the country — global politics have been hitting uncomfortably close to home as President Donald Trump has demanded control of Greenland while publicly disparaging Denmark. The town of about 600 is deeply proud of its immigrant roots, celebrated in museums, festivals and the Danish flags that flutter outside homes and businesses. It's also solidly Trump country, which makes the president's demands especially jarring here. For many in Elk Horn, Denmark isn't an abstract foreign nation — it's where grandparents were born, where cousins still live and where folk dancing and frikadeller (Danish meatballs) remain central to town life. The town offers a vivid look at how Trump's upending of global alliances can ripple into everyday life in unexpected ways — threatening tourism built around Danish heritage and straining relationships built over generations. "People are hurt," one longtime town leader told me. "I don't want my relatives in Denmark to be scared of us." — Mike Hixenbaugh, senior investigative reporter |
