EDITOR'S NOTE

Longtime Members know that building lasting wealth is about far more than chasing returns. It's about cultivating the right habits, mindset and daily disciplines that support success in every area of life.

In today's article, Dr. Joel F. Wade explores a powerful shift most people overlook: replacing wishful thinking about the future with intentional action in the present. Through a simple analogy and practical reflection, Joel shows how focusing on what you can control - your habits, your skills and your choices - can dramatically improve your finances, your relationships and your overall quality of life.

This is the kind of perspective that quietly compounds over time. I think you'll find it both grounding and motivating.

THE SHORTEST WAY TO A RICH LIFE

Bringing Your Best to Your Future

Joel Wade, Special Contributor, The Oxford Club

Joel Wade

I'd like to begin with a simple question - one that can bring more clarity, effectiveness and satisfaction to every important part of your life, including your finances.

If you imagine yourself a couple of years from now, living life at your best, what does that look like?

What would you change, what would you prioritize, and how would you spend your time?

Many people immediately picture positive outcomes: wealth showing up, problems dissolving, opportunities falling into their laps. These images can feel pleasant, but they rely on what psychologists call an external locus of control - the belief that your success depends primarily on outside forces. That mindset may be soothing in the moment, but it does little to move your life forward.

A more effective approach is to focus on what you can actually do.

When I'm in a water polo game and my mind drifts to the score or to hoping we'll win, I stop playing in the present. The score depends on countless factors outside my control - how my teammates play, how the other team plays, the referees, even luck. If I dwell on that, I'm no longer participating. I'm wishing.

But when I commit instead to playing my best right now - drawing on my training, staying aware of my teammates, entering a state of flow - two things happen:

  1. We're far more likely to win.
  2. I enjoy the game far more deeply.

The same principle applies to your wealth, your relationships, and your daily quality of life.

Focus on What You Can Bring to the Future

Imagine your best future again - but this time, center your attention on what you bring to it. Think about the kind of person you want to be, the values you want to live by, and the habits you need to build.

If you want greater financial success, what must you do to move in that direction?

Learn more about investing. Build skills that make your work more valuable. Develop better saving and allocation habits. Work smarter, not harder.

If you want better relationships, what do you need to contribute to them?

More curiosity, kindness, playfulness, or presence. A willingness to learn what makes relationships thrive.

If you want a richer quality of life, pay attention to what energizes you and what drains you. Then redirect your time toward the things that bring joy, love and meaning - and away from the things that diminish your enthusiasm.

Create a Realistic Vision of You at Your Best

Once you're oriented toward your own agency, write a short narrative describing yourself at your best a few years from now. Make sure your goals are measurable, aligned with your values, and realistically achievable. Ambition is good; fantasy is not. (Turning a few hundred thousand dollars into a billion in two years is a fantasy, not a plan.)

Then take the VIA Survey of Character Strengths from the Authentic Happiness site. It takes only 20-30 minutes and will identify your top five "signature strengths." Read your "best self" story again through this lens. Ask yourself how these strengths can support your goals, and how you might apply them in new, more intentional ways.

This is where change begins.

Take One Action This Week

Finally, choose one small, specific action you can take this week to get started. It doesn't have to be grand. It simply needs to be something you can commit to doing at a particular time and place - an action that sets momentum in motion.

One of humanity's greatest gifts is the ability to imagine possible futures and act deliberately to create them. Direct your strengths, your habits and your best qualities toward the future you want… and you may be surprised by how quickly things begin to shift.

Be well,

Joel
