But RC Cola cost just $0.35 for a can. And that was good enough for me. I feel truly fortunate to have experienced that. I was born in the late 1980s. I didn't know it at the time, but I would be part of the last generation to grow up without a cellphone in my pocket. When my cousin and I would go out... our family simply trusted that we would come back eventually. And when you wanted to meet up with someone... you set a specific time and place. I miss that time. In many ways, things were simpler. We've obviously seen plenty of advancements since then. There's a lot I love about having a mobile computer in my pocket. But the prices... There was something truly magical about finding a handful of change and getting a can of pop... or riding bikes over to McDonald's and getting a meal. Unfortunately, there's no going back. And in specific instances... sure, it could happen. But the march of inflation is relentless. And broad-market deflation is incredibly rare. The U.S. Federal Reserve has data on this. Take a look at the chart below... This is the Fed's measure of deflation probability. And it goes back to 1990. It specifically measures "the probability that the personal consumption expenditures price index (PCEPI) inflation rate (12-month changes) over the next 12 months will fall below zero." In other words, this measure tracks the probability of prices broadly coming down. Now, the chart makes the higher-probability eras look extreme. But the reality of the changes experienced was subtle. For example, in 2008, the Fed's Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers fell about slightly more than 3% from its July high to its January 2009 low. And we saw a similar small drop in prices from January 2020 to May 2020. As of the most recent reading, the probability of deflation – as measured by the Fed – is literally zero. Sure, home prices have come down a bit. And we've seen some other prices stabilize, too. But the reality is that time marches on... and so do prices. I think this is something that we all know intuitively. But many folks still hold out hope for a return to lower prices across the board. If you're waiting for the return of the $0.35 can of pop... you're going to be waiting a long time. The same holds true if you're dreaming about a great "price reset." That said, maybe tonight I'll go for a walk. And I'll leave my cellphone at home.
