Deadly winter storm impacts millions from Midwest to Mid-Atlantic, nearly 2,000 flights canceled | A major winter storm pushing from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic has turned deadly, slamming several states across the East with heavy snow, and causing chaos on the roads and at the airports. This afternoon, more than 50 million people are under winter alerts stretching from Missouri to southern New Jersey, with 6-12 inches of snow expected across the Mid-Atlantic, including the Washington, D.C. metro area. At least four deaths have been linked to the extreme weather. In Missouri, a public works employee was killed by a sliding dump truck. Two people were killed in a single-car crash in Kansas. And in Texas, the brutal cold is blamed for the death of one person in front of a bus shelter. Nearly 2,000 flights have been canceled across the country as of this afternoon, according to FlightAware, and hundreds of thousands of customers are without power across multiple states. Follow the storm's path with our live tracker. |

Congress certifies Trump election victory on fourth anniversary of January 6th attack |
As snow pounded the nation's capital this afternoon, Congress convened to certify President-elect Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 election, exactly four years after a mob of his supporters attacked the Capitol as he tried to overturn his 2020 election loss. Vice President Kamala Harris, in her constitutional role as president of the Senate, presided over the session and certified her own defeat to Trump. "Democracy must be upheld by the people," Harris told NBC News on her way to the chamber. Ahead of the certification, Trump accused President Joe Biden of making the transition "as difficult as possible" and cited Biden's recent executive orders on climate, vowing to undo them once he is back in office. Today's certification was a far quieter affair than four years ago, with no major protests. "There are no election deniers on our side," Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, said on Friday. |
Biden travels to New Orleans after deadly terror attack to meet families of victims |
President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are en route to New Orleans this afternoon, where they will meet with the families of some of the 14 people killed in the New Year's Day terror attack. This evening, the Bidens are scheduled to attend an interfaith prayer service in honor of the victims hosted by the Archdiocese of New Orleans at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis. "My heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday," Mr. Biden said in the hours after last week's attack. The FBI said on Sunday that the attacker, Shamsud-Din, Jabbar had visited New Orleans at least twice before, and released video of the city that Jabbar had recorded though his Meta smart glasses, as well as new images of him appearing to place IEDs near the scene of the attack. |
Canada's embattled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces his resignation |
Justin Trudeau has announced he will step down as Liberal Party leader and prime minister, and will leave office once a new ruling party leader is chosen. Trudeau, who has led Canada for nearly a decade, said it was clear that he could not "be the leader during the next elections due to internal battles," and cited polarization inside and outside the country. The prime minister has faced growing calls to resign from members of his own party over plunging opinion polls and his handling of President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats. |
