Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz announced today the release of a report on two grants totaling $789,858 awarded by the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security, Division of Administrative Services, Justice and Community Services (West Virginia JCS) to Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) in Charleston, West Virginia. The Office of Justice Programs (OJP) provided this funding to West Virginia JCS to make subawards to direct service providers across the state, including these grants to LAWV. As of August 2024, West Virginia JCS had reimbursed LAWV $633,142. The DOJ Office of the Inspector General (OIG) found that LAWV provided services and support to underserved victim populations, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and elderly and disabled victims of financial exploitation. However, we found that LAWV needs to develop and implement policies and procedures for the grant closeout process. The DOJ OIG made one recommendation to OJP and West Virginia JCS to improve its grant management and administration, and LAWV's management of subaward performance. OJP, West Virginia JCS, and LAWV concurred with the recommendation. |
