Harris and Trump campaigning in Pennsylvania as polls show dead heat |
All eyes are on Pennsylvania today, with both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump holding events in the crucial battleground state, as our latest national NBC News poll shows the race is locked in a dead heat. With 22 days left until Election Day, Harris will hold a rally this evening in Erie County, a bellwether that has a history of predicting which candidate will carry the state. Harris has also agreed, for the very first time, to sit for an interview with Fox News, which will be conducted from Pennsylvania and air on Wednesday, the network announced. Trump has a town hall scheduled this evening in the Philadelphia suburbs, where his campaign said he will focus on the economy, though much of the former president's closing argument in these final weeks has focused largely on anti-immigrant messaging. Also today, federal authorities are investigating after they say a man with guns in his vehicle was arrested at a checkpoint near a Trump rally in Coachella, California. The suspect released a video saying he is a Trump supporter and denying that he intended to assassinate the former president. |

Suspect arrested after threats force FEMA to make "operational adjustments" |
A western North Carolina man has been arrested for allegedly threatening to harm FEMA employees responding to Hurricane Helene, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said. William Jacob Parsons, 44, was arrested and charged with "going armed to the terror of the public," the sheriff's office said. Parsons was in possession of a handgun and a rifle at the time of his arrest, authorities said. He was released on a $10,000 bond. FEMA said over the weekend that it was making "operational adjustments" to its recovery operations in North Carolina after unconfirmed reports that an armed militia was threatening workers. Neither the National Guard nor the North Carolina governor's office has confirmed reports of truckloads of armed people threatening FEMA workers, and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said it determined that Parsons had acted alone. There have been growing fears for the safety of FEMA workers due to the misinformation that has been spread about the federal response to Helene. |
Survivors from Trump rally shooting in Butler speak out for the first time |
For the first time since the July assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, the two men who were wounded in the stands at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania are speaking out about the life-altering injuries they are now experiencing. Jim Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 54, were struck when the gunman opened fire from a rooftop at the rally venue on July 13, and both survivors spoke today to our Tom Llamas. Copenhaver was shot twice. When the first shot rang out, Copenhaver said he "heard part of my sleeve go away and I heard psheww. I mean I heard it distinctly." He said he turned to a friend and said he thought he had been shot, and was then struck again. Dutch said being shot felt like "getting hit with a sledgehammer right in the chest." He said there were "chunks of bleacher and scrap metal flying all around" until the gunman stopped firing. Watch more of our NBC News Exclusive interview on our broadcast tonight. |
Hezbollah drone strike kills four Israeli soldiers; deadly Israeli strikes on Gaza |
Four Israeli soldiers were killed and 61 others were injured in a Hezbollah drone strike on a military base overnight, in the deadliest attack on Israeli soil by the Iran-backed militant group since the conflict escalated last month. While in Gaza, the IDF has launched a series of deadly strikes over the past 24 hours, including on a flour distribution center, a school and a hospital where displaced Palestinians were sheltering, according to health officials in the Hamas-run enclave. The U.S. has announced it is sending troops and an advanced anti-missile system to Israel, as the Middle East braces for Israel's response to Iran's ballistic missile attack earlier this month. The U.S. embassy in Lebanon has issued an alert urging American citizens to "depart Lebanon now while commercial options still remain available." |
