Australia: Retail Foods Annual

Australia is experiencing a cost-of-living crisis due to rising inflation. Consumer behavior and societal trends are driving shifts in shopping habits. Meanwhile, sustainability, waste reduction, food integrity, and healthy eating are key factors influencing product choices. The value of Australian consumer-oriented (i.e., snack foods, breakfast cereals, meat and poultry, dairy, eggs and products, fresh fruit and vegetables, processed fruit and vegetables, fruit and vegetable juices, nuts, wine, beer, nursery products, pet food, etc.), fish, and seafood imports totaled US$13.9 billion in 2023. The United States accounted for US$1.3 billion or 10 percent of Australia's total food related imports. Most of Australia's imports in these sectors are from New Zealand, and the United States is the second largest supplier.

China: China Removes Quarantine Access Requirements for Frozen Fruit Imports

China removed quarantine access requirements for frozen fruit imports in August 2024. This allows frozen fruit imports from any country, according to the updated imported food catalogue by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). The new policy is expected to facilitate the entry of additional U.S. frozen fruit products such as mixed frozen berries and frozen raspberries. U.S. exports were previously limited to frozen strawberries, cherries, blueberries, and cranberries. This will benefit all major frozen fruit producing countries, and in particular, lead to an increase in frozen durian imports.

Japan: Retail Foods Annual

The retail industry in Japan remained stable despite the continued strength of the U.S. dollar vs. the Japanese yen. To drive demand, retailers have strategically targeted the younger generation who seek easy-to-prepare, frozen, and ready-to-eat foods. The retail sector had sales total $198 billion in 2023 with increased demand in supermarkets, convenience stores, and drug stores.

Spain: Cotton and Products - Spain Update 2024

After hitting low levels in MY 2023/24, Spain's cotton production is set to rebound in MY 2024/25. Exports remain the main outlet for Spain's cotton lint production. The projected recovery in production should allow exports to bounce back to average levels.
