The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office's (IEDO) commitment to building a clean, decarbonized industrial sector puts American communities at the forefront of our work, ensuring that we build an equitable, healthier future for all Americans.  Join us for a series of webinars to discuss how IEDO can make sure solutions to industrial emissions put manufacturing workers and historically disadvantaged communities first, so that no American is left behind in our new clean energy economy. Aug. 26, 2024: Considering Communities in Industrial Decarbonization: Opportunities to Advance DEIA, Energy Equity, and Workforce in Industrial Decarbonization Research and Development Projects Part 1 of a series of planned events, the "Opportunities to Advance DEIA, Energy Equity, and Workforce in Industrial Decarbonization Research and Development Projects" webinar will be a high-level discussion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), energy equity and environmental justice (EEEJ), workforce, and community engagement needs in industrial decarbonization. Three thought leaders will share their insights on how communities and community impacts can be meaningfully factored into applied research and development (R&D) projects. Topics will include an overview of DEIA, EEEJ, and workforce opportunities along the industrial decarbonization innovation pipeline, EEEJ considerations in R&D projects, and strategies and best practices for community engagement. This webinar will include presentations and a panel discussion featuring: Benjamin Sovacool, Director of the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability and Professor of Earth & Environment Nikita Dutta and Kate Anderson, National Renewable Energy Laboratory Researchers and Developers of the Justice Underpinning Science and Technology Research (JUST-R) Metrics Framework Jennifer Hirsch, Senior Director of the Center for Sustainable Communities, Research, and Education at Georgia Institute of Technology. REGISTER FOR THE WEBINAR Aug. 27, 2024: Virtual Workshop on the Impacts of Energy, Equity, and Environmental Justice on Decarbonizing the Industrial Sector IEDO will host a virtual workshop to solicit stakeholder feedback on energy, equity, and environmental justice considerations for decarbonizing industry to inform DOE's new vision study, Pathways for U.S. Industrial Transformations: Unlocking American Innovation. These considerations are necessary to ensure consistent and comparable evaluation of impacts and enable equitable outcomes, which are far too often impeded by a lack of data and metrics. This workshop will explore strategies to better integrate these considerations into decarbonization decision making and the associated criteria, metrics, and targets to evaluate societal impacts of different portfolios of pathways. This workshop is a follow-on to the Transforming Industry: Strategies for Decarbonization Workshop hosted by DOE, held in May 2024 in Arlington, Virginia. During the workshop, DOE will present an overview of the vision study, including the framing, approach, and preliminary conclusions. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions to provide direct feedback to IEDO. The input collected at this workshop will be used to inform the vision study.
