An appointment with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers unique and challenging experiences for the highly motivated attorney. The Office is hiring a Supervisory AUSA to serve as Chief of the Appellate Unit. The candidate selected for this vacancy will be responsible for supervising and personally litigating criminal appeals on behalf of the United States in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. This position can be filled in any of our geographic divisions (Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, or Newport News). Please be sure to state your preference in your cover letter.
The successful candidate will be hired as an Assistant United States Attorney and will immediately serve as a Supervisory AUSA under a temporary promotion. The Supervisory AUSA will supervise four other appellate attorneys and their work on appeals involving the full range of criminal cases that the District prosecutes and post-conviction appellate litigation. Appellate AUSAs, including the Chief of the Appellate Unit, draft briefs, present oral arguments before the Fourth Circuit, participate in some district court litigation, provide advice to other prosecutors, and participate in moot courts to prepare AUSAs for oral arguments. Briefs will involve a wide variety of constitutional, statutory, and other claims. Promotions to Supervisory AUSA positions are made on a temporary basis at the discretion of the United States Attorney. At the end of the temporary promotion, the Supervisory AUSA may be returned to a non-supervisory AUSA with the USAO or extended.
