What happens when innovation meets algae?

Register for the AlgaePrize Competition to find out!

Registration Deadline

Showcase the power of algae by contributing to a clean energy future through innovative research projects! The deadline to register and submit team abstracts for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) AlgaePrize 2023-2025 competition is Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 12:00 pm ET.

The AlgaePrize is a DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) national competition, in partnership with the Algae Foundation and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which encourages high school, community college, undergraduate, and graduate level students to pursue innovative ideas for the development, design, and invention of technologies within the commercial algae value chain. During the competition, each team will present their research to a panel of expert judges and the Grand Champion team can receive a cumulative total award of $35,000 in prize money and national recognition.

Watch the Highlight Video!

The AlgaePrize competition paves the way for the next generation of bioeconomy professionals by generating technologies that will ultimately support the nation's biofuel research efforts and commercial algae value chain. Watch the AlgaePrize highlight video to learn how 15 finalist student teams converged at the inaugural competition over three days in April 2023 for one shared goal: proving the power of algae to help solve the energy, food, economic, and climate challenges facing our world today.

This is the second iteration of the AlgaePrize competition, which was launched in January 2022, with 307 individual competitors from 64 student teams. The AlgaePrize 2023-2025 competition is now part of DOE's American-Made Challenges, a series of unique prize competitions designed to incentivize and reenergize American innovation in the energy marketplace.
