Funding Updates DOE Launches Prize to Strengthen Microelectronic Supply Chains Through Microbattery Design and Commercialization EERE's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office launched the Microbattery Design Prize. This two-stage competition will award up to $1.1 million in federal funding, as well as performance and safety testing services with the U.S. National Laboratories, to innovative, small-capacity battery design projects that yield improved performance, safety, and recyclability. Renewable News Request for Information: Solar Fuels and Solar Thermal Energy Storage EERE's Solar Energy Technologies Office requests feedback from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on the technology needs and cost targets for renewable fuels produced using solar-thermal energy and thermal energy storage. Responses are due by April 14. DOE and Tennessee Valley Authority Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Advance Hydropower Technologies EERE's Water Power Technologies Office and the Tennessee Valley Authority announced a memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration on hydropower technology development. This joint effort will focus on evaluating and demonstrating different methods for operating hydropower plants to meet the electricity grid's changing needs. Distributed Wind Energy Brings Value to Remote and Rural Communities A four-year study, called the Microgrids, Infrastructure Resilience, and Advanced Controls Launchpad project, found that distributed wind energy could be a cost-effective source of clean power to many communities in remote and rural areas. For example, it's already making a difference in remote St. Mary's, Alaska, where one wind turbine produces 50% of the town's annual power.
