FMLA: Providing Flexibility for Changing Needs, Then and Now
In a recently published DOL blog, ODEP Chief of Staff Anupa Iyer Geevarghese reflected on the 30th anniversary of the landmark Family and Medical Leave Act and the important role the law plays in helping workers retain employment after onset of a disability or undergoing treatment for a chronic condition. She also shared insight gleaned from a recent national online dialogue indicating that leave is a key support to help people with Long COVID get needed treatment and rest to manage their symptoms.

On the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology's Future of Work Podcast, Zariah Cameron, Equity Centered UX strategist at Ally, shares how critical it is to embrace authentic inclusion in all aspects of work. She discusses how you can make your digital and physical workplaces more inclusive and more equitable by paying attention to the details such as inclusive alt text, mental health programs and more. Zariah also shares how being a Black woman in UX design has motivated her to create pathways for others in the field.
EXTENDED! Mental Health Matters: Online Dialogue Now Open
Now through April 7, share ideas and vote on ideas submitted by others on topics such as expanding access to workplace supports for those with mental health conditions and reducing related stigmas. Additional discussion topics include reasonable accommodations, telemental health, wellness programs, EAPs, self-disclosure and more. Input gathered will help DOL more effectively support workers' mental health needs and bolster the behavioral health care workforce.
In honor of April's Financial Literacy Month, join the Employment First Community of Practice on April 12 from 3:00 – 4:00 PM ET for the webinar "Effective Approaches to Benefits Planning." The webinar takes a closer look at benefits planning from a state-systems perspective and looks at a model of implementation from Missouri that can be emulated by states and providers. The webinar will also cover how benefits planning can assist all job seekers to understand how their benefits are affected by work activities, and how providers and state agencies each contribute to creating a successful system.
