Sports: What to read and watch

Read about the New York City Marathon, watch the World Series.

What to Read This Weekend

Abdi Abdirahman, who is a five-time Olympian, will run his final competitive New York City Marathon this Sunday.Karsten Moran for The New York Times

There are so many stories about Abdi Abdirahman, the longtime bon vivant of American distance running.

About how he fled Somalia with his family and eventually settled, as a teenager, in Tucson, Ariz. About how he picked up running as a college freshman and found that he had a knack for it. About how he has made five U.S. Olympic teams while emerging as a consistent and joyful presence on the world marathon stage, well into his 40s.

Now, after being considered ageless for nearly a decade, Abdirahman, 45, can see the finish line. He is set to run his final competitive New York City Marathon on Sunday, though there is a big caveat: He wants to return to New York in the future so that he can run the race recreationally and be a part of the sweaty swarm of humanity that crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn.

What to Watch This Weekend

Justin Verlander came into the game with an 0-6 lifetime record in the World Series. With five solid innings on Thursday, he secured his first win in the Fall Classic.

All times are Eastern.

Baseball

The Astros-Phillies series has been a humdinger, with a five-homer game and a no-hitter already. There's no reason that Game 6, with Houston leading by three games to two, shouldn't be a great one, too (Saturday, 8 p.m., Fox). Then, if necessary, Game 7 (Sunday, 8 p.m., Fox)!

Soccer

Major League Soccer finishes up with the M.L.S. Cup. The two best teams in the regular season are both making their debut there: Philadelphia Union and L.A.F.C., which hosts (Saturday, 4 p.m., Fox).

Football

No. 1 Tennessee and No. 3 Georgia, both unbeaten, meet as the best not only of the S.E.C. East, but also possibly the whole country (Saturday, 3:30 p.m., CBS).

Horse Racing

A slew of championships will be decided at the Breeders' Cup, capped by a chance to see one of the most impressive horses in years, Flightline, in the Breeders' Cup Classic (Saturday, 1 p.m., USA; 3:30 p.m., NBC; Classic at 5:40 p.m.).

Auto Racing

Someone will win the final NASCAR race of the year at Phoenix. But more important is who among Christopher Bell, Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott and Joey Logano crosses the line first: That driver will be NASCAR's champion (Sunday, 3 p.m., NBC).
