Robert Alexander / Getty Images file The Supreme Court on Monday wades into the decades long legal fight over affirmative action in cases challenging policies at the University of North Carolina and Harvard University, with the conservative majority hearing back-to-back oral arguments. Affirmative action, introduced to address historic discrimination, has been a contentious issue for years. The arguments against affirmative action are being brought by a group called Students for Fair Admissions, led by conservative activist Ed Blum. The group's lawyers have asked the justices to overturn a 2003 ruling on Grutter v. Bollinger, in which the court said race could be considered as a factor in the admissions process because universities had a compelling interest in maintaining a diverse campus.
