Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last month announced the first 20 charges stemming from a newly formed police force dedicated to hunting down voter fraud and other election crimes in the state. But voting rights advocates are urging the arrested, all of whom had been previously incarcerated on convictions of murder or felony sexual offenses, to fight the charges. They say that the individuals did not know they were breaking the law and in many cases government officials had sent them voter registration materials, leading to their confusion as well as difficulties for the state, which needs to prove intent for a conviction.
