 The future Purple Line could provide great opportunities for affordable housing and businesses, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich says this week. He encourages nonprofit businesses and organizations that could face threats to apply for County security grants. He believes improved procedures should lead to a smoother election in November. The County Executive thinks everyone must be inspired by Energy Action Month to help address climate change. And he offers thoughts on his meeting this week with leaders from the Korean embassy.  Montgomery Parks' Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood will host a free "Fall on the Farm" festival from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Farm Park and will include demonstrations, opportunities to see farm animals up close, music and self-guided tours.  Registration for Montgomery County Recreation's Youth Basketball programs will open at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3.  Applications are now being accepted from nonprofit organizations seeking grants from $800,000 in total funding from Montgomery County's "Nonprofit Security Grants" program. Three information sessions on how to apply will take place in October.  Bicycles that are no longer being used by some can make a big difference for others. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation's annual Bicycle Donation Drive on Friday, Oct. 14, will make it easy to donate previously owned bikes and ensure they will have a continued impact  Montgomery County health officials, in partnership with the African American Health Program and the Office of Community Partnerships, will host a virtual monkeypox town hall meeting that will focus on how the disease is impacting the Black community at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. It will be the third meeting in a series planned by the County to address the recent spread of monkeypox. The foundation is hoping participants will sign up to join the event between Saturday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Oct. 23. | The Wheaton Urban District will continue its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with three consecutive Saturday events on Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Downtown Wheaton. The "Dance for Life" events will emphasize "Hispanic Culture through Dance and Music." The next event, from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, will have the culture focus of Merengue.  The Montgomery County Department of Transportation offers residents and school administrators free resources to support children walking and biking to school through the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the County will again be participating in Walk to School Day.  Montgomery County continues to be in the "low" community transmission rate for COVID-19. However, COVID remains a major concern as new strains become prevalent. Updated vaccines are now available as boosters.  Montgomery County Recreation will host family-friendly events this fall season, ranging from fall festivals to swimming with pumpkins. The October events will be hosted at community recreation centers, senior centers and aquatic facilities across the County. Residents 18-and-older who are interested in electric scooter lessons will have the opportunity to attend free clinics in October and November sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. The next clinic will be held Saturday, Oct. 1. Participants will be able to take a test ride, learn safety tips and get details on basic scooter laws.  How to do business with the Montgomery County Government will be the featured topic of an in-person fair held by the County's Department of Procurement starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11. County Executive Marc Elrich will deliver opening remarks for the event, which will be held at the East County Community Recreation Center.  The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is partnering with the State of Maryland and local municipalities to celebrate "Walktober" with a series of activities in October promoting the State's official exercise: walking. The month-long campaign highlights the safety and health of pedestrians. Walktober also highlights the importance of County pedestrian infrastructure projects.  'The Nurse and the Midwife: The Story of Clara Barton and Emma Jones of Gibson Grove' Will Be Montgomery History Presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 4 Clara Barton touched many lives as the Civil War's "Angel of the Battlefield" and later as president of the American Red Cross. Behind the scenes, others supported her efforts and kept her household running smoothly. Among the many Black people Barton employed over the years, none maintained a closer, longer-lasting relationship with Barton than Emma Jones of the Gibson Grove community in Cabin John. The story of their relationship will be the subject of a Montgomery History online presentation at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4. | EveryMind will host a virtual Spanish language town hall meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, for parents, caregivers, educators and mental health professionals who care for LGBTQ+ youth. The event is being held as part of activities recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month.  Current, former and potential Ride On bus users are being asked by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation to participate in its "Ride On Reimagined" Customer Satisfaction Survey, which will be available online through Friday, Oct.7. Those who participate will be entered into a sweepstakes to win $100 gift cards.  In partnership with Montgomery County's public safety departments, its Office of Human Resources will hold a two-session Public Safety Career Fair for job seekers 18-and-over on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the County's Public Safety Training Academy in Gaithersburg. The County is seeking to fill more than 100 positions across the County's public safety cluster.  Montgomery County Recreation's Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, which opened in 1972 and this year is celebrating 50 years of serving the community, will observe its golden anniversary with a free community celebration from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Free online workshops and one-on-one sessions geared toward assisting job seekers and entrepreneurs will be offered throughout October by Montgomery County Public Libraries. |
