Sports: What to read and watch

Baseball statues, and world track and field

What to Read This Weekend

Tom Seaver is immortalized in bronze and steel outside the Mets' stadium.Calla Kessler for The New York Times

Every Hall of Famer has a plaque measuring 15½ inches by 10¾ inches, Tyler Kepner writes.

So what separates the greats from the very greats? A statue. There is no vote for statue worthiness, no formal process for attaining one. It takes a certain transcendence, in addition to sheer excellence on the field. As the saying goes: If you know, you know.

What to Watch This Weekend

All times are Eastern.

Track and Field

The end of a major track championship is always highlighted by the relays. The U.S. should contend for medals in the 4x100-meter races at the world championships in Oregon, as long as they can hang onto the baton, which is not always a certainty. The 4x400s, with slightly less frenetic handoffs, are a safer bet (Saturday and Sunday, 8 p.m., CNBC, 9 p.m., NBC).

Golf

The year's fourth major for women is underway at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France, overlooking Lake Geneva. Nelly Korda, bouncing back from Covid-19 and surgery to remove a blood clot from her arm, is among the contenders (final round, Sunday, 5:30 a.m., Golf Channel; 9 a.m., CNBC).

Cycling

Jonas Vingegaard is in the driver's seat at the Tour de France, and after a time trial on Saturday and the ceremonial parade on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on Sunday, he is very likely to claim his first Tour (Saturday, 8 a.m., NBC; Sunday, 10:30 a.m., USA).

Soccer

In the last quarterfinal of the women's Euros, undefeated France will look to eliminate the defending champion, the Netherlands (Saturday, 3 p.m., ESPN2).
