Republicans split on same-sex marriage bill, which faces uncertainty in the Senate

Senate Republicans are agonizing over whether they should allow a House-passed bill to codify federal protections for same-sex marriage to become law. Most polls show Americans support legal same-sex marriage, and some GOP strategists want the party to pass the bill, but that risks upsetting the cultural conservatives, who make up a large portion of the Republican base. For now, Democrats have locked down nearly half the GOP votes needed to break a 60-vote filibuster, and the outcome could come down to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has yet to reveal his position.
