Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 4, 2022 CONTACT: Lynn Sutfin, 517-241-2112, Sutfinl1@michigan.gov                                             City of Benton Harbor Water Response Resource and Opportunity Fair being hosted on May 12 Information on free lead inspections, home water testing and soil testing available along with job opportunities LANSING, Mich. – The City of Benton Harbor Water Response Resource and Opportunity Fair is slated for Thursday, May 12 at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor, Joel E. Smilow Teen Center, 190 W. Empire Drive, from 4 to 7 p.m. Families will be able to get information about services and resources available to City of Benton Harbor residents to help reduce or eliminate lead from their homes. Resources will include: Home water testing kits Soil testing Free bottled water Filters and filter installation education Free lead inspection sign-up Job opportunities "We appreciate the U.S. EPA, State of Michigan, Berrien County and the City of Benton Harbor's commitment to connecting the people of our community to resources and opportunities as we move from crisis to recovery," said Beth Haire-Lewis, community leader and City of Benton Harbor resident. "I encourage everyone to come out to the May 12 Opportunity Fair and take advantage of the jobs, information and resources that are available." The Resource and Opportunity fair will also feature employers seeking employees, water response resources and information, as well as lead service line replacement information. The event will include information and representatives from local community organizations, the City of Benton Harbor, Berrien County Health Department, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. "If you're looking for a job opportunity or to learn more about how you can play a role in Benton Harbor's recovery, come to the Opportunity Fair," said City of Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad. "The fact that so many on the federal, state and local level have come together to empower our community with information and opportunities is extraordinary and something that should not be ignored.
