The 50th New York City Marathon is on Sunday.

There have been 1,283,005 finishers over 49 runnings, and thousands of photographs captured by scores of photographers for The New York Times.

There are images etched with joy and pain, with cheers and awe, with nervous anticipation and celebratory finishes. This is the story of one race, five boroughs, dozens of champions and over a million hopeful runners.

Here are some of the best New York City Marathon photos of the past 50 years.

What to Watch This Weekend

All times are Eastern.

Football

The 6-2 Tennessee Titans lost one of the best offensive players in the league, Derrick Henry, to a foot injury. But now the Adrian Peterson era can begin. Can Peterson roll back the years at 36? He'll have to face the 7-1 Los Angeles Rams, who have added none other than Von Miller to their stifling defense (Sunday, 8:20 p.m., NBC).

Soccer

The M.L.S. season wraps up with seven Eastern Conference games played at once, followed by six Western Conference ones. Atlanta, Orlando, Montreal, the Red Bulls and the L.A. Galaxy are among those fighting to make the playoffs (Nashville-Red Bulls, Sunday, 3:30 p.m., ESPN and ESPN Deportes; L.A. Galaxy-Minnesota, Sunday, 6 p.m., FS1 and FOX Deportes).

Auto Racing

The long NASCAR season (it started in February) wraps up with the championship at Phoenix Raceway. Whoever finishes higher of Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson and Martin Truex Jr. will win the title. Elliott is the defending champion (Sunday, 2 p.m., NBC).

Horse Racing

The Breeders' Cup puts a cap on the North American horse racing season. The field for the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic includes Medina Spirit, whose Kentucky Derby victory is still up in the air because of a drug test, and Essential Quality, winner of the Belmont and Travers (undercard races, Saturday, 3:05 p.m., NBCSN; Breeders' Cup Classic, 8:40 p.m., NBC).
