Big Oil's pollution in Canada is poisoning the environment - and may even be deadly
Oil and gas companies like ExxonMobil and the Canadian giant Suncor have transformed the area known as Alberta's tar sands — also called oil sands — into one of the world's largest industrial developments. The mines' ecological impacts are so vast and so deep that Indigenous people there say it's challenged their very existence, even as it has provided jobs and revenue to Native businesses and communities. People have long suspected that the tar sands mines were poisoning the land and everything it feeds.
