The Food and Drug Administration released guidance Wednesday that recommended food manufacturers and restaurants cut the salt in their products, with the goal of reducing Americans' salt intake by 12 percent — an amount that would equate to 60 teaspoons per person a year. The guidelines, aimed at lowering rates of heart disease, are expected to cover a wide variety of foods — from chain restaurant meals to processed food on grocery store shelves and even baby food.
