Zach D Roberts/NurPhoto via Getty Images For many of us, August 2017 may feel like a lifetime ago, so let's do a quick refresh.   The "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, featured hundreds of white supremacists carrying tiki torches, swastikas, and chanting things like, "Jews will not replace us." White mobsters beat a young Black man on the ground, while a now-infamous grey Dodge Challenger rammed into anti-racist activists and killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer. The rally's violence helped forge an extremist path that would lead to more deadly white supremacist attacks and the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.    To date, only a few of the white supremacists involved in Charlottesville have been held accountable for the violence that transpired that day. But on Monday, a long-awaited federal trial will begin. Civil rights nonprofit Integrity First for America alleges that the rally organizers did not plan a peaceful protest but, rather, meticulously conspired to bring violence to Charlottesville. Kelly / The Daily Progress via AP IFA hopes for a multimillion-dollar judgment that would bankrupt and dismantle the network of the white supremacists involved in the mob. And victims of Charlottesville's violence, as well as many other Americans, are hoping they will finally see justice served against some of the most notorious white supremacists in the country. STAYING ON TOP OF THIS   Alec Baldwin shot the prop gun that killed a crew member on his upcoming film, officials say Alec Baldwin "discharged" the prop gun that killed a cinematographer on the set of a movie he was filming in New Mexico, authorities said Thursday night.   Halyna Hutchins, the 42-year-old director of photography for the movie Rust, died from the injury after being flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the Santa Fe sheriff's office said. The film's director, Joel Souza, was also injured. It's unclear how the incident occurred at this time. A statement from the sheriff's office said, "According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged." SNAPSHOTS   The US House found Steve Bannon in contempt for defying Jan. 6 subpoena. The contempt decision will now be formally referred to the Justice Department, which will decide whether to take the case to a grand jury and pursue charges against Bannon.   A family of three and their dog died mysteriously on a hike. Two months after the bodies of Ellen Chung, John Gerrish, 1-year-old daughter Miju, and family dog Oski were found on a central California hiking trail, officials finally identified the cause of death.   Brian Laundrie's remains were confirmed to be found in a Florida nature park. The discovery ends the intense search for Gabby Petito's fiancé, who was named a "person of interest" in her disappearance. USA Fencing is blocking a top athlete from a competition after sexual assault accusations. It took eight years and widespread outcry. USA Fencing in July acknowledged to BuzzFeed News it has known for eight years that Alen Hadzic was accused by a teammate of sexual assault. Strangulation is often a precursor to homicide by intimate partners. People whose partners have attempted to choke or strangle them in the past are nearly 10 times more likely to be murdered than others, according to research published by the National Institute of Justice. In the aftermath of Gabby Petito's death, strangulation survivors see themselves in her case, and they want better outcomes for other people who are experiencing domestic violence:   "We need to talk about how common this is," Kit Hunt, 52, a strangulation survivor in Austin, told BuzzFeed News. "How survivors are treated ... We're not believed ... We focus on the crime, and then everybody forgets about it. We need more discussion, that's what's missing."   The former Netflix employee who was accused of leaking data said they "didn't want to be the face" of the Dave Chappelle controversy When former Netflix employee B. Pagels-Minor got involved in the behind-the-scenes activism in response to Dave Chappelle's The Closer, they never anticipated being cast into the public eye. But since they've been accused of leaking internal numbers about the show to the media and subsequently fired, people are sounding the alarm over Netflix's decision to let go Pagels-Minor, a Black trans employee who is pregnant.   The Closer has been widely criticized for including anti-trans jokes and for attacking the LGBTQ community. When talking about pushback to the show, Pagels-Minor said, "I don't want this to be about me. I want this to be about the commonality of, if we spend time learning and educating ourselves about others, then we're better. I think that's the real thing."   Meet Aunt Karen, the TikToker dedicated to calling out racists Denise Bradley has a new method of fighting against racism online. When she identifies people using racial slurs or engaging in discriminatory behavior, she heads to her TikTok. There, she posts their names and publicly available info about their lives, such as where they work, and encourages followers to help her demand accountability.   Bradley has developed a huge following for her activism — over 1.4 million followers and counting — but a cybersecurity expert warned that her actions could constitute harassment.
