NDEAM Event – America's Workforce: Powered by Inclusion

ODEP brought its National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) observance to a close with a virtual event premiering on October 20. During the event, Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy Taryn Williams, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs Director Jenny Yang and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy Jennifer Sheehy explored this year's NDEAM theme, "America's Recovery: Powered by Inclusion." The recording is now archived for anyone to view.

National Apprenticeship Week

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2021 is November 15-21. Held annually, NAW is a nationwide celebration during which industry, labor, equity, workforce, education and government leaders host events to showcase the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeship in meeting pressing workforce challenges. Through its Partnership on Inclusive Apprenticeship (PIA), ODEP works to ensure apprenticeship opportunities are inclusive of and accessible to people with disabilities, focusing on in-demand, high-growth industries.

Online Dialogue: Advancing Financial Equity for Individuals with Disabilities

ODEP, in collaboration with DOL's Employee Benefits Security Administration, recently created a financial toolkit to help people with disabilities make informed economic decisions throughout their careers. To gather feedback and suggestions on the best ways to improve the toolkit, DOL is sponsoring a national online dialogue now through November 8. Submit ideas or comment and vote on ideas submitted by others to help advance employment and economic empowerment for people with disabilities, particularly those from underserved communities.

SEED Partner Podcast on Diversifying the Cybersecurity Workforce

In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month and Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week, Western Governors' Association published a new podcast titled "Diversifying the Cybersecurity Workforce." The podcast, developed in collaboration with the State Exchange on Employment & Disability, explores state efforts to address workforce shortages in the cybersecurity field by expanding the talent pipeline and actively training unemployed and underemployed populations, including those with disabilities.

SEED Launches Collaboration with National Association of State Chief Administrators

The State Exchange on Employment and Disability (SEED) presented this week at the National Association of State Chief Administrators' 2021 Institute on Management and Leadership Redefining Agility and Resilience a collaborative effort to help state government officials address employment barriers for people with disabilities. The effort will produce a toolkit for state as a model employer (SAME) policies and practices. SEED also hosted an interactive learning lab session, "Policies and Perspectives that Build an Inclusive State Workforce," that highlighted SAME policy options and featured a discussion with Kristen Ballinger of Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities.

PEAT Celebrates NDEAM

The Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology published its October newsletter, which focused on National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and highlighted PEAT's new AI & Disability Inclusion Toolkit, resources on inclusive extended reality (XR) in the workplace and more. As part of its NDEAM observance, PEAT also posted a blog exploring how accessible technologies can increase inclusion in workplaces across America during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Benefits of Becoming an Employment Network (EN) for Workforce Systems Series - Part I

On November 4, from 2:00-3:00 p.m., ET, DOL and the Social Security Administration will hold the first of a two-part webinar series highlighting the benefits of state and local area workforce leadership connecting to and becoming Employment Networks (ENs) using various well-established models. This first webinar will provide a brief description and an overview of the newest resource tool, Ticket to Work: Operating a Workforce EN Planning Guide and Workbook (which includes a desk aid for front line staff). Speakers from ENs will also share best practices and lessons learned.
