September 17, 2021 ODEP at 20: Leading Voices – Kathy Martinez In celebration of the Office of Disability Employment Policy's 20th anniversary, ODEP Deputy Assistant Secretary Jennifer Sheehy posted a blog on "ODEP at 20: Leading Voices – Kathy Martinez." In the blog, Sheehy interviewed Kathy Martinez, who was ODEP's assistant secretary from 2009-2015. "We need to get more qualified people into the private sector because that's how we change corporate attitudes," said Martinez. "When people with disabilities are part of the team, disability becomes not so big of a deal. The stigma goes away." Advancing Worker Equity at the U.S. Department of Labor The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs and the Women's Bureau are hosting a national online dialogue on "Advancing Worker Equity at the U.S. Department of Labor." This dialogue will help the department create greater employment and economic opportunities for people from historically underserved communities. The feedback and ideas gathered will inform potential policies and programs to advance worker equity, including for women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities and other underrepresented communities. You can submit your ideas or comment and vote on others' ideas through October 1. The Financial Impact of Systemic Inequality and Intersectionality The LEAD Center will present a webinar on "Race, Ethnicity and Disability: The Financial Impact of Systemic Inequality and Intersectionality" on September 21 from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. ET. The webinar will focus on the financial conditions of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color at the intersection of race, ethnicity and disability. Subject matter experts will discuss the financial impact of systemic inequality and intersectionality and how workforce development professionals are applying the lessons learned about race, disability and poverty. They will examine ways to improve financial inclusion and build economic self-sufficiency through tools like credit building, financial education and ABLE accounts. National Disability Employment Awareness Month Twitter Chat The Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion and the Campaign for Disability Employment will host a Twitter Chat on preparing for National Disability Employment Awareness Month on September 23 from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. ET. The chat will explore ways employers and others can participate in NDEAM in October and incorporate this year's theme, "America's Recovery: Powered by Inclusion," into workplace activities. Use #CelebrateNDEAM to follow the chat. EARN Newsletter The Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion published its September newsletter. Among other topics, the newsletter highlights two EARN publications outlining the disability-related provisions and themes of Executive Order 14035: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce. Job Accommodation Network 2021-2022 Webcast Series Registration is now open for the Job Accommodation Network's 2021-2022 webcast series. The webcasts are free, fully accessible and provide practical information and expert guidance on job accommodation and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance issues. The training series will include "Ask JAN! Expert Q&A," "Return to Work After COVID-19 – Focus on Mental Health and Cognitive Limitations," "Accommodation Solutions for Autoimmune Disorders," "Next Level Accommodation and ADA Challenges," "ADA and Accommodation Lessons Learned: Stay at Work/Return to Work Edition," and "Accommodation Solutions for Executive Functioning Deficits." Long COVID-19 and Workplace Accessibility The Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology released "Long COVID-19 and Workplace Accessibility." The article provides links to guidance on long COVID-19 in the workplace, including determining disability status and using the accommodation process. Building Inclusive Apprenticeships in the Clean Energy Sector The Partnership on Inclusive Apprenticeship posted "Clean Energy Spotlight" to highlight clean energy jobs as a focus for inclusive apprenticeships. This includes positions in the solar, electric vehicle manufacturing, wind and energy efficiency sectors. The spotlight offers information and resources for employers to hire and train apprentices, including people with disabilities and other underserved individuals, to build a pipeline of skilled workers for their workforces. |
