[TODAY] World Mosquito Day

Continuing the fight against the world's deadliest animal. Mosquitoes, while a nuisance for some, can be deadly for many. On this day, 124 years ago, British scientist Sir Ronald Ross discovered that the female Anopheles mosquito transmits malaria between humans. This finding provided the foundation for scientists across the world to better understand the deadly role of mosquitoes in disease transmission. Now, half of the world's population lives in an area where a mosquito bite could lead to malaria, and poor and remote communities in Africa and Asia are particularly affected. On World Mosquito Day, we highlight the success of PMI and our partners in the fight to treat, prevent, and ultimately eliminate malaria. Spotlight on Women in Entomology  Women, as both patients and caregivers, bear the health, societal, and economic burden of malaria. But women are also leading the fight against this disease and the mosquitoes that spread it. From the community to the laboratory, women play essential roles they play in the fight against malaria-carrying mosquitoes. In this story, meet six mosquito-fighting women whose work we support. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic our lifesaving work has continued, because mosquitoes don't social distance.  Nepha in Kenya Watch Here USAID's Afya Ugavi program has successfully distributed over 1 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets donated by PMI to the people of Bungoma. Over the last 15 years, U.S. funding has supported distribution of over 20 million nets in Kenya. Jackie in Rwanda Watch Here Jackie, a student in Rwanda, is one of 30 million people protected from malaria during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to continued support from the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative through the PMI VectorLink Project.
