The Resident Legal Advisor (RLA) will represent the U.S. Department of Justice and OPDAT in the implementation of justice sector technical assistance activities designed to strengthen relationships between the United States and Cameroon on criminal justice matters, and to provide assistance in improving its abilities to combat terrorism and related financial and transnational crimes. The RLA will help promote efficient case management, evidence-based prosecutions and adjudications, and the professional and humane management of prisons. The RLA will assist justice sector personnel to improve their ability to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate criminal cases and execute sentences in a fair and efficient manner. This could involve analysis of and advice on anti-terrorism legislation, money laundering law, and other related criminal statues, codes, law, and regulations. The RLA would also be expected to develop and implement a series of programs, practical trainings, and workshops that focus on encouraging coordination among law enforcement and security forces, and that promote a common understanding among the various justice and security force actors regarding evidence, the rights of the accused, criminal procedure, and the burden of proof in criminal cases. This position involves periodic travel in the region and will require the RLA to engage with justice sector officials on combating terrorism and related crimes through international cooperation.
