Zebra Mussels on Boat Propeller

A zebra mussel-encrusted boat propeller from Lewis and Clark Lake in South Dakota. Zebra mussels are an invasive species that attach to virtually any hard, non-moving surface.

Shortnose Gar (Lepisosteus platostomus)

Shortnose gar are a primitive freshwater fish native to the U.S. These predatory fish inhabit slow-moving waters associated with rivers and reservoirs.

Harvesting Hatchery Fish (3)

Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery produces about a dozen different fish species annually. Many of them spend time growing in the 32 rearing ponds on the facility.

They are harvested by slowly draining the pond and then using seine nets to capture them.

Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery produces about a dozen different fish species annually. Many of them spend time growing in the 32 rearing ponds on the facility.

Tanker trucks are used to transport the fish to the lakes where they will be released.

These are yellow perch, a very popular sportfish in the upper Midwest.
