THE BIG STORY
"It feels like we're profiting off of Black death": Tulsa residents see civil rights tourism but no reparations
We've been extensively covering the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa massacre this week. Here's how Memorial Day weekend went in Tulsa — two conflicting groups hosting centennial events.
One was hosted by the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, well funded and connected to state Republican leadership. The other from the Black Wall Street Legacy Festival, run by survivors and descendants of the massacre, pushing for justice for the three surviving elders in the form of reparations.
Survivors and activists are furious at the continued absence of any reparations and what they say is a century of underinvestment in Black communities. This neglect has had painful and very real implications for Black Tulsans, whose health and wealth can be determined by their zip code.
All the while, they say, some local and state officials have been seeking to promote the Tulsa anniversary as a rebranding opportunity, pushing a form of civil rights tourism in the city that belies legislative antagonism to the Black Lives Matter movement. ![]() Nehemiah Frank (left) teaches his cousin David McIntye II about the Tulsa massacre, in the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 28, 2021. The editor of a top medical journal is leaving after the publication said "no physician is racist"
Howard Bauchner is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association and has been at the helm of its extended network of journals for a decade.
But Bauchner will be leaving his position after the prestigious research periodical faced fierce blowback against a podcast and a tweet that questioned the existence of racism in medicine.
Bauchner had been on administrative leave for more than two months while an independent committee conducted an investigation into the production of the podcast, in which another top journal editor, Edward Livingston, dismissed the notion that there was systemic racism in medicine. SNAPSHOTS

Serena Williams showed support to Naomi Osaka after she was criticized for not doing press at the French Open. Last week, Osaka withdrew from mandatory press conferences in the French Grand Slam, explaining that relentless questions could be detrimental to her mental health. Serena Williams was asked about the situation, and offered that, "The only thing I feel is that I feel for Naomi."
An activist infiltrated the Veiled Prophet Ball in the 70s. Here's what she thinks of the Ellie Kemper controversy. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor became a trending topic over the weekend when users resurfaced photos of her being crowned the Queen of Love and Beauty at the 1999 Veiled Prophet Ball. An activist who infiltrated the event told us why she thinks Kemper should address her participation in the organization. ![]() A St. Louis Post-Dispatch photo from Dec. 23, 1999, shows Elizabeth Claire Kemper, now known as Ellie Kemper, before taking the stage to accept the crown as the new Queen of Love and Beauty at the Veiled Prophet Ball. The pandemic has left us with a lingering trauma about money
Plenty has been said about the unequal financial consequences of the pandemic. Here's a quick illustration: For those who were well off, savings rates skyrocketed as people tried to build safety nets. For those who were not well off, the economic effects have been devastating.
One finance psychologist told us, "The economy is just nothing but a collection of traumatized people who are living out what happens when you get traumatized."
We have no idea what the long-term effects of that trauma could be — we can only begin to guess. Having grown used to Postmates or Amazon delivery, we may rarely return to stores. We may never work in an office five days a week again — or at all.
Our bank accounts might recover — but our brains will never be the same again. Here's the connection between money and trauma. BEACH-READY READS 18 books you can read in paperback this month
