THE BIG STORY
Thousands of people protested in support of Palestinians in major cities around the world
Thousands of people across the world showed their support for Palestinians in protests amid some of the worst fighting between Israelis and Palestinians since the 2014 Gaza War, with demonstrators from Canada to Japan waving flags and chanting "Free Palestine" on Saturday.
On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike hit a refugee camp in Gaza, killing eight children and two women. Hours later, more airstrikes destroyed a 12-floor residential building in Gaza that housed international news organizations, including the Associated Press and Al Jazeera, in a move widely condemned as a threat to the free press in the region.
The Israeli military claimed that the strike on the building was necessary because it contained "Hamas military intelligence assets." The AP, however, said there was "no indication Hamas was in the building or active in the building."
In Madrid, thousands showed up in support of Palestinians. In Paris, riot police fired tear gas at thousands of peaceful protesters. Here's a roundup of photos from protests around the world. Videos show a Black man with mental illness dying in jail after deputies used a stun gun and knelt on his back
Late last week, authorities in South Carolina released video footage showing how a Black man with a mental illness died in January after two sheriff's deputies pepper-sprayed him, used a stun gun multiple times, and restrained him with knees on his back while trying to remove him from his jail cell.
Jamal Sutherland, 31, died on Jan. 5, after Charleston County Sheriff's deputies tried to take him to a bond hearing for a misdemeanor assault charge.
The day before he died, Sutherland was arrested and put in a cell at the detention center's behavior modification unit after he was accused of being involved in a fight at the mental health facility his parents had checked him into.
At one point in the footage, Sutherland is heard saying, "I can't breathe." He is also heard saying, "I'm not resisting, officer." SNAPSHOTS
NYC Pride is banning police from participating in its events to create "safer spaces." Event organizers said law enforcement must acknowledge the violence it has caused, particularly against Black and trans people. The ban applies to law enforcement and corrections officers until at least 2025.
Oklahoma's governor was kicked off the Tulsa Massacre commission for signing a bill banning critical race theory in schools. Gov. Kevin Stitt was kicked off a commission established to mark the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa massacre. Critics of the new law he signed argue that it is meant to squash the teaching of critical aspects of the country's racial history, including the historical impact of racism on people of color.
Tamir Rice's family is pressuring the Biden administration to reopen a federal investigation into his death. Tamir Rice was 12 when he was shot and killed by Cleveland police officers in 2014. His family is escalating pressure on the Justice Department to reopen the federal investigation into his death.
The 9-month-old tiger that's been missing in Houston has been found. Police had been searching for the big cat since it was spotted lounging on the front lawn of a home last week. The department said the tiger was handed over by the wife of the man who loaded the animal into a Jeep Cherokee last week and fled from officers. IN LESS THAN TEN MINUTES
We found Joe Biden's secret Venmo. Here's why that's a privacy nightmare for everyone.
First, there was a passing mention in the New York Times that the president had sent his grandchildren money on Venmo. So we went looking — and less than ten minutes later, we found the president's secret Venmo account.
The find also reveals a network of the president's private social connections — a national security issue for the United States, and a major privacy concern for everyone who uses the popular peer-to-peer payments app.
We searched for the president's account using only a combination of the app's built-in search tool and public friends feature. We found nearly a dozen Biden family members and mapped out a social web that encompasses not only the first family, but a wide network of people around them, including the president's children, grandchildren, senior White House officials, and all of their contacts on Venmo.
Here's why this matters: Privacy advocates and journalists have warned about Venmo's privacy problems for years, yet the PayPal-owned app has persisted with features that can place people — including the president of the United States — at risk.
