Mule deer at Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge

After a long winter, green vegetation is attractive to just about every browser/grazer. Mule deer are no exception, and are known to ride the "green wave" along their migration routes. As snow melts and soil temperatures rise, sedges, cool season grasses, and other plant species that can handle the cool day time temperatures and often still freezing night temperatures, begin to green up. This new growth fuels them on their recovery from a harsh winter, travel along migration routes to where they will spend the summer, and final development of fawns that will soon be born.
