Sports: What to Read and Watch

Ubaldo Jiménez's promise to his mother. Plus ... curling! Yes, really.

Ubaldo Jiménez could have started his major league journey at age 16 with the Mets. His mother, Ramona, said no. She wanted him to finish high school.

A year later, when Jiménez was going to sign with the Colorado Rockies after securing his high school degree, his mother had a different condition. She wanted him to promise that when the time was right he would return to his studies.

"I never forgot it," he told James Wagner this week. "And she didn't let me forget it."

After 12 major league seasons, a World Series appearance, a no-hitter and more than $65 million in career earnings, Jiménez did just that. He graduated (magna cum laude, no less) from the Florida Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in business administration and management.

What to Watch This Weekend

All times are Eastern.

Soccer

A busy weekend. The mini-tournament to kick off the N.W.S.L.'s season reaches its final with Gotham FC (formerly Sky Blue FC) taking on the Portland Thorns (Saturday, 1 p.m., CBS).

The Spanish race is wide open with four games. Atlético Madrid is hanging on to a 2-point lead over both Real Madrid and Barcelona. Atlético visits Barcelona this weekend (Saturday, 10:15 a.m., BeIn), and Real hosts the fourth-place team, Seville (Sunday, 3 p.m., BeIn).

Can't wait for the Manchester City-Chelsea Champions League final on May 29? The teams play a preview this weekend in Manchester (Saturday, 12:30 p.m., NBC).

Hockey

As the N.H.L. regular season winds down, all eyes are on Connor McDavid, who improbably seems set to score 100 points in this shortened 56-game season. He needs 4 more in his last four games, and the way he has been playing they could all come in the next game at Vancouver (Saturday, 10 p.m., NHL Network).

Curling

After the disappointment of the cancellation of the 2020 world championships, curling fans are delighted to have their big event back. This weekend the women's final will be contested in Calgary, Alberta (Sunday, 3 p.m., NBCSN).
