Dr. Karen Smith had about 50 leftover vaccine doses after serving a recent clinic in a rural North Carolina church. She brought them to a local poultry plant and vaccinated all the workers who would agree. But she still had 29 doses left, so she set up in a gas station to dispense the rest. For many communities, the next leg of the country's vaccination push could look increasingly like this, as providers focus on a tailored boots-on-the-ground approach.
