The Resident Legal Advisor (RLA) supporting the Malta-based International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ) will represent the U.S. Department of Justice and OPDAT in the implementation of justice sector technical assistance activities designed by the IIJ for partner nations in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Balkans. The IIJ RLA will also support the continued development of the IIJ as an institution. The Institute is dedicated to the strengthening of criminal justice and other rule of law institutions and to providing justice sector actors, including parliamentarians, judges, prosecutors, law enforcement representatives, police, prison officials, defenders and civil society representatives, with rule of law-based training on the development and use of policies, good practices, and procedures so countries are more capable of safeguarding the security of their citizens from transnational threats, such as terrorism. The IIJ RLA will serve as Director of Programming and work with other U.S. government experts and international partners in supporting practitioner-focused programming and the administrative development of the IIJ. This position involves periodic travel in the region and will require the IIJ RLA to engage with justice sector officials from countries in the region on combating terrorism and financial crime through international cooperation.
