Two-time Olympic boxing champion Claressa Shields is the only American fighter to repeat as an Olympic champion. She's the fastest boxer in history to win world titles in three different weight divisions. |
So why, she wonders, doesn't she get the same exposure as men in the sport? Why does she have to all but beg networks to broadcast her fights? |
"They're sexist and can't handle strong women," she said of the networks. "They're always yelling equality, equal pay, equal opportunities, but they don't mean it. Because all they have to do is say yes. They can say: 'Yes, you know what? We're going to put women's boxing on every card no matter what.' That would help build women's boxing, but they won't do it." |
So, she said, "I'm taking my career into my own hands." |

What to Watch This Weekend |

Many players weren't crazy about the idea, but the N.B.A. has pressed ahead with its All-Star Game in Atlanta. This year, the game itself, as well as the 3-point, skills and slam dunk contests will take place on one day. In the main event, Team LeBron (Antetokounmpo, Curry, Doncic, Jokic) will face Team Durant (Irving, Embiid, Leonard, Beal). (Sunday, skills and 3-point, 6:30 p.m.; game, 8 p.m.; slam dunk at halftime, TNT.) |
Three major leagues and three big games this weekend. First, the German Bundesliga gets a moment in the American network TV spotlight. Bayern Munich, winners of the last eight championships, takes on Borussia Dortmund, runner-up in five of those seasons. (Saturday, 12:30 p.m., ABC.) |
In La Liga, there's the Madrid derby. Atletico, which has taken advantage of disarray at the big two teams to lead the league, takes on Real. (Sunday, 10:15 a.m., beIn.) |
As Rory Smith wrote this week, Manchester City this season "is, without question, a marvel of engineering: fine-tuned and slick and working in almost flawless, mechanical synchronicity." City leads the league by daylight. But as the cliché says, when you play your biggest rival, you need to throw away the record book. Manchester United is in second, 14 points down, and any long-shot hopes at a title ride on winning this game. (Sunday, 11:30 a.m., NBCSN, Telemundo.) |
It's been a cold winter and a rough year. At the risk of going all "Fields of Dreams" on you, how about some baseball, with its promise of spring, and better days ahead? (Twins-Red Sox, Saturday, 1 p.m., MLB; Phillies-Yankees, Sunday, 1 p.m., MLB.) |
