The following Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) reports were released on Monday, March 8, 2021.
Burma: Impact of Burma Military Coup on Agriculture Sector and Trade Since Burma initiated a series of political and economic reforms in 2011, U.S. agricultural exports have grown over 80-fold, reaching a record $174 million in 2019 and $167 million in 2020. However, the February 1, 2021 coup d'état and country-wide peaceful protests in opposition to the military's actions, and the military's increasingly violent response, have crippled the logistics sector and led to closures and delays in the trade and banking sectors. Collectively, this creates vast uncertainties for U.S. agricultural exports to Burma.
China's hog herd recovery in 2021 will be bolstered by larger sow inventories and high pork prices. However, animal disease outbreaks will moderate pork production. Domestic pork prices will encourage both swine operation expansion and strong imports. China's cattle herd will continue increasing in 2021 as producers expand their herd in response to strong domestic beef prices. Although, beef production will be constrained by competitive beef imports and high feed prices. E-commerce, cold-chain logistics, and changing consumer preferences for chilled beef will be important drivers in expanding beef consumption beyond China's 1st tier cities.
Taiwan is the United States' eighth-largest export market for food and agricultural products and 18th largest market for seafood products, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. While 2020 saw a dip in U.S. fishery and seafood exports to Taiwan, previous years showed growing interest in U.S. products due in part to promotional efforts from the Agricultural Trade Office, Taipei. Taiwan consumers increasingly seek out high quality U.S. seafood products such as lobster, Alaskan pollock, scallops and crab. This report presents an overview of the market and opportunities for U.S. seafood exporters to Taiwan.
