Scientists baffled by animal life found beneath almost half a mile of Antarctic ice

Geologists trying to take sediment samples from the seafloor beneath a giant ice shelf of Antarctica's Weddell Sea discovered what biologists believe are types of sponges, according to findings published Monday.

The team drilled a hole through 3,000-foot-thick ice and lowered a video camera revealing the "stationary" organisms attached to a giant boulder in the pitch black water. The findings have mystified scientists, who are struggling to understand how the sea creatures could survive without sunlight or food. "There are still animals out there that can break the rules that we have written for them," one biologist said.
