January 29, 2021 Dear Washingtonians, Earlier this week, we received some good news: the Biden Administration committed to increasing the District's vaccine allocation by 15% for the next three weeks. Still, though, we continue to advocate for more doses and remain committed to ensuring an equitable distribution of the vaccine. Even though our supply is limited, we are making doses promptly available as we receive them so that we can get them into the arms of DC residents and workers. In yesterday's Situational Update, you can find a list of who is currently eligible to receive the vaccine in Washington, DC. This evening, we also announced that on Monday, February 1 at noon, individuals who work in person for a licensed child care provider or an independent school that is located in the District will be eligible to book a vaccination appointment with One Medical. If you have already received the vaccine or are planning to take the vaccine, I hope you will join me in talking to friends and neighbors who are still unsure. Some of our neighbors have questions about the vaccine and by sharing accurate and trustworthy information, we can build confidence, ensure more people know that the vaccines are safe and effective, and together, we can end this pandemic and get back to enjoying our wonderful city and the company of our friends and family. Sincerely,   As part of Continuity of DC Government Operations, Mayor Bowser received the first dose of the vaccine this week. Before getting vaccinated, the Mayor explained that even though she doesn't like needles, she knows that it is important for all of us to get the vaccine when it is our turn so that we can end the pandemic and get our lives back to normal.  Applications are now open for the 2021 Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP). District youth between the ages of 14 and 24 are encouraged to apply online at summerjobs.dc.gov. Applications will be accepted until Saturday, February 27, 2021. In 2020, MBSYEP was able to continue during the pandemic by going online and providing six weeks of telework experience for approximately 9,000 youth. Back to Top  This week, as part of the District's ongoing recovery efforts, Mayor Bowser introduced the Reopen Washington, DC Alcohol Act. The legislation proposes several innovative approaches to help rebuild the District's economy by providing businesses and patrons with expanded opportunities; bringing new essential services, including new full-service grocery stores, to Wards 7 and 8; and maintaining the city's reputation as a top destination to live, work, and dine out. Proposed provisions in the Reopen Washington, DC Alcohol Act include: - Extending programs introduced on an emergency basis, including Streateries
- Establishing a Commercial Lifestyle License that allows patrons to walk around and consume alcohol purchased from on-premises establishments within predefined boundaries
- Creating a new 25 percent full-service grocery store Class A License to help attract new full service grocery stores to Wards 7 and 8; applicants interested in using this license to open a Class A grocery store in Wards 1-6 must first operate such a store in Wards 7 and 8 for at least six months
- Amending several licensing operational requirements

Back to Top  The District's plan to develop a new hospital at St. Elizabeths East and improve the District-wide system of care includes the development of two new urgent care centers in Wards 7 and 8. This week, Mayor Bowser announced that the first of the two new urgent care facilities will open in the Maple View Flats in Ward 8 later this year. The facility will have basic lab services and imaging and provide standard urgent care outpatient services. The location of the second urgent care facility, to be located in Ward 7, will be announced this spring and is slated to open in 2022. Learn more HERE. Back to Top |
