Secretary Bernhardt traveled to Fort Worth Texas for the 2020 Winter Roundtable held by the Western Caucus Foundation. He was joined by Fish and Wildlife Service Director Aurelia Skipwith. They discussed the impact of the Trump Administration's major conservation successes like the Great American Outdoors Act, which will provide $9.5 billion dollars to rebuild and improve our parks, refuges and other public lands sites over the next 5 years, in addition to how Interior has supported American job creation, worker safety reforms, energy independence and expanded outdoor recreation opportunities. The Senate has voted unanimously to confirm Lanny Erdos as Director of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. Erdos has served as the Principal Deputy Director, exercising the delegated authority of the Director of the OSMRE since 2019. Secretary Bernhardt reopened the newly rehabilitated Arlington Memorial Bridge to drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. The $227 million project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Park Service history, is a momentous accomplishment for the Department of the Interior and its federal partners and will extend the bridge's useful life for 75 years. Arlington Memorial Bridge has served as a monument to the sacrifices and valor of our nation's military personnel since its dedication in 1932. Secretary Bernhardt formally established the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument in Jackson, Mississippi, as the 423rd unit of the National Park System. He recognized "Medgar Evers as a true American hero – someone who fought the Nazis at Normandy and fought racism with his wife Myrlie on the home front. The life works of these great Americans helped shape our nation in making the United States a more perfect union." The Secretary announced that Interior's Office of Natural Resources Revenue disbursed more than $8 billion in Fiscal Year 2020 from energy production on offshore areas and federal and American Indian lands. Despite this year's pandemic, this still represents an increase of approximately 30% compared to 2016 disbursements made at the end of the previous Administration. The Bureau of Reclamation this week notified Congress of its intent to transfer ownership of the Provo River Project South Branch Canal to the Utah Lake Distributing Company. The proposed transfer is the seventh Reclamation water project transfer implemented under the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act, which was signed by President Trump in 2019. USGS director and former astronaut Dr. Jim Reilly announced this week that in collaboration with NASA, USGS will leverage its full technological ability to meet the nation's growing environmental information needs. The 2020 National Space Policy, recently released by the White House, provides guidance for America's civil, commercial and national security policy strategic investment in space. She's back! Wisdom, a Laysan albatross and the world's oldest known, banded bird in the wild, has returned to her home at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. More than that, she and her partner are taking turns incubating an egg! Wisdom's estimated age is 69-years old...and she's laid as many as 36 eggs in her long life. |
