The Arab Spring was meant to drive out dictators. Instead, it empowered them.

Ten years ago this week, revolutions broke out across the Middle East and North Africa, with millions demanding change from the sclerotic regimes that have long dominated the region.

While some countries like Tunisia have since enjoyed relative security and freedom, many others scorched by the Arab Spring's fires have suffered instability, war and fueled the autocratic regimes it aimed to overthrow.
