'They identify with him': How a gay, Latino mayor is taking rural Trump country by storm

When Daniel Corona was elected mayor of West Wendover in 2016 by just 100 votes, he became Nevada's youngest and first openly gay Latino mayor — a win he did not expect in this rural, northeastern city nestled in one of the state's most conservative regions.

Corona believes he won over residents by exposing them to liberal viewpoints and using social media to make local government more accessible. As he starts his second term, Corona is navigating how to lead his city through another possible Covid-19 shutdown — one that could deal a devastating blow to casinos, the city's lifeblood industry.
