| October 9, 2020 Building a Future That Works The U.S. Department of Labor will host a virtual celebration of the 75th annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. "Building a Future that Works" will be held on October 20 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET. The event will explore the crucial role of accessible technology in this year's NDEAM theme of "Increasing Access and Opportunity" for people with disabilities, and the Labor Department's work to ensure that emerging technologies are accessible to all in the workplace. Features will include insightful dialogues with thought leaders and a video showcase of the latest innovations in communications, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and more. Job Developing for People with Disabilities National Online Dialogue The "Job Developing for People with Disabilities During Times of Increased Unemployment National Online Dialogue" is open for participation now through October 18. Hosted by the Office of Disability Employment Policy, it will gather information about how job developers help people with disabilities obtain Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE) during times of increased health risks and unemployment. People with disabilities, their family members, employment specialists, VR counselors, job coaches, employers, and others are encouraged to share their insights and ideas on how job developers are helping people with disabilities obtain and retain meaningful employment. Ticket to Work Request for Information The Office of Disability Employment Policy published a Request for Information (RFI) in the Federal Register on a proposed transfer of the Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program (Ticket program) from the Social Security Administration to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The Ticket program assists adult disability beneficiaries in becoming employed. The President's budget for fiscal year 2021 includes a legislative proposal to improve program structure and coordination and transfer administration of the program to DOL to better integrate the program into the public workforce system and better serve disability beneficiaries who want to work. The RFI seeks public input on how the Ticket program's proposed changes would impact disability beneficiaries who want to work and the systems that currently serve their employment and related needs, and identify critical considerations for designing and implementing an improved program. Comments are due by November 13. LEAD Center Newsletter The LEAD Center released its quarterly LEAD On! newsletter. The newsletter includes a snapshot of the LEAD Center's initiatives, information on connecting veterans with service-connected disabilities to apprenticeships, links to archived webinars, and more. PEAT Podcast The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT) posted a new episode of its Future of Work podcast series on "Accessibility Solutions for Employees." In this episode, Mike Hess, founder and executive director of the Blind Institute of Technology, discusses the positive impact of accessibility solutions on employers and employees. |
