The Resident Legal Advisor (RLA) will work under the auspices of the United States Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, representing the Department of Justice and OPDAT in the implementation of the OPDAT-Maldives Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs program. The RLA will work closely with the Government of Maldives to enhance the capabilities of prosecutors, investigators, and judges while offering targeted support on complex and transnational crimes, human trafficking, cybercrime, anti-corruption, and judicial reform and training. The RLA will also work closely with OPDAT headquarters staff and U.S interagency partners to ensure the assistance program meets the needs of Maldives while supporting departmental and U.S policy objectives. During his or her tenure, the RLA will provide technical assistance on a variety of criminal justice projects including: (1) comprehensive judicial reform efforts; (2) build capacity of prosecutors and law enforcement to investigate and prosecute complex crimes; (3) build capacity to combat public corruption and improve methods for asset recovery; (4) enhance mutual legal assistance capabilities; and (5) introduce plea agreements or other methods for the expeditious resolution of criminal cases.
