After John Lewis' death, Mitch McConnell's varied history on voting rights resurfaces

To his critics, Mitch McConnell is now the most critical and powerful opponent of protecting American voting rights. But, earlier in his career, the younger senator had a more complicated relationship with voting rights legislation, particularly that championed by the activist-turned-politician John Lewis.

Following Lewis' death, calls for renewed action on voting rights have intensified. And critics of McConnell have been galvanized against the Senate majority leader, who has refused to hold hearings or move a Voting Rights Act amendment that would renew the authority for federal voting rights enforcement and oversight.
