DOE Seeking Input and Collaboration on Science and Technology Response to COVID-19 DOE encourages consideration of scientific questions that underpin COVID-19 response and that the research community may answer using DOE user facilities, computational resources, and enabling infrastructure. Water Resource Recovery Prize Submission Deadline Extended The application submission deadline for the DOE Water Resource Recovery Prize has been extended to no later than 5:00 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, May 28, 2020. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: DOE Announces $25 Million for Plastics Recycling R&D, Launches Upcycling Consortium The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office and Bioenergy Technologies Office issued a joint Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the development of new plastics that are capable of efficient recyclability, and for improving recycling strategies that can break existing plastics into chemical building blocks that can be used to make higher-value products. DOE also announced the launch of the new BOTTLE ("Bio-Optimized Technologies to Keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment") Consortium that is focused on designing new plastics and recycling strategies, in collaboration with industry and academia. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: DOE Announces $20 Million Investment in Workforce Development in Emerging Fields Up to $20 million in funding was announced for workforce development at universities in emerging energy fields. This funding supports the Administration's commitment to preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers, thereby sustaining American global leadership in the renewable power, sustainable transportation, and energy efficiency sectors. This DOE investment will fund a land grant university to pursue interdisciplinary research by supporting a coordinated expansion of existing joint graduate education programs with DOE National Laboratories. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: DOE Seeks Industry Partners in High Performance Computing For Manufacturing DOE recently announced up to $3 million for a special solicitation in the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) program targeting Manufacturing USA institutes, AMO consortia, and their member companies. Applicants are highly encouraged to partner with universities and non-profit organizations located within federally designated Opportunity Zones and/or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). AMO funds the HPC4Mfg program to support the development of energy-efficient manufacturing processes through partnerships between U.S. manufacturers and the National Laboratories. DOE Manufacturing Institute Selects Projects to Advance U.S. Leadership in Smart Manufacturing The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) announced more than $6 million for eight projects to improve energy-intensive manufacturing processes and strengthen the U.S. manufacturing sector. CESMII accelerates smart manufacturing adoption through the integration of advanced sensors, data analytics, platforms and controls to improve productivity, precision, performance, and energy consumption in manufacturing.
