Sports: An Interview with the Olympics President

Plus what to watch this weekend. Yes, we have some ideas.

What to Read This Weekend

As the coronavirus has swept the globe, placing cities and countries on lockdown, canceling the spring sports calendar and jeopardizing virtually every major event scheduled for 2020, Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, has not wavered in his determination to hold the Summer Games in Tokyo, Matthew Futterman writes.

In an interview on Thursday, Bach acknowledged the increasingly troubling situation but remained optimistic that infection rates might subside enough to allow the Games to go forward.

“What makes this crisis so unique and so difficult to overcome is the uncertainty. Nobody today can tell you what the developments are tomorrow, what they are in one month, not to mention in more than four months,” he said.

“Therefore it would not be responsible in any way to set a date or take a decision right now, which would be based on the speculation about the future developments.”

What to Watch This Weekend

All times are Eastern.

So you’re stuck at home and eager to see some sports. But the youngsters in your abode (or maybe the grown-ups) insist on watching Disney-Plus for hours on end.

Here are a few movies that manage to sneak some sports action in between cartoons and musical numbers.

‘Cars’ (2006)

Let’s leave aside the humor, life lessons and colorful characters, and focus on what’s most important: the racing action. There’s a three-way dead heat, a hyped-up rematch and a startling twist at the end (no spoilers here). Also, the cars all talk, a step up from Herbie the Love Bug, profiled here last week, who is sentient but silent.

Tell your companions that A.O. Scott said that this film was “an absolute delight — funny and charming, fast-moving and full of surprises.” Then get the last laugh because the protagonist, Riley, plays hockey. It’s not quite the N.H.L. but it will have to do.

‘The Phantom Menace’ (1999)

Yeah, many people found the first “Star Wars” prequel disappointing. But … pod racing! And little Darth Vader is in the race.

‘The Simpsons: Homer at the Bat’ (1992)

There are hundreds of “Simpsons" episodes, many of them classics, but a lot of fans put this one right at the top. Ozzie Smith, Ken Griffey Jr., Roger Clemens and a team of stars make guest appearances as ringers for the nuclear power plant’s softball team. And you hate to say it, but there are probably a few real-life managers out there who would also try to get the platoon advantage by pinch-hitting Homer Simpson for Darryl Strawberry.

‘High School Musical’ (2006)

A good one for your tween, and, well, there are some basketball sequences with Zac Efron.

Folks, some day televised sports will return. Remember, we’re all in this together.
